The Wooden Bowl


A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year grandson.  The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.  The family ate together at the table.  But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.  When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.  The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. We must do something about Grandfather," said the son.  "I've had enough of  his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."

So the husband  and  wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden  bowl.  When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometime he had a  tear in his eye as he sat alone.  Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.
The  four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the  father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.  He asked  the  child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents that they were speechless.  Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.  Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and  gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he  ate every meal with the family.  And for some reason, neither husband nor  wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or  the  tablecloth soiled.

On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what  happens how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.


I've learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll  miss them when they're gone from your life.

I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life."

I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you.  But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.

I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone. 
People love that human touch - holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.
I've learned that you should pass this on to everyone you care about. I just did. Sometimes they just need a little something to make them smile. People will forget what you said...people will forget what you did...but people will never forget how you made them feel.

...The Greatest Gift...


There is no greater gift to behold.
Than the gift that I now hold.

Within my body, the greatest gift of all,
A more precious gift I cannot recall.

To receive this gift you and I know
That you had to suffer a great sorrow.

This gift cost more than a cent
Because it was heaven sent.

It has cost you your life,
For me to have a better life.

There is no greater gift to behold
Than the gift that I now hold.

I thank you with all my being
because in your wisdom you have seen.

That in your death you could give
A part of you to help someone live.

You didn't know who would get part of you.
Because in your mind it didn't matter who.

There is no great gift to behold
Than the gift that I now hold.

Even though that I might not chose
one day the gift I might lose.

The special gift that you did give
To make my life easier to live.

But don't dispair it isn't how long it will last.
It is the quality of life you gave, when you past.

Thank you from the deepest part
Deep with my thankful heart.

..Two Souls form One..

You became my love, you became my life,
when I made the vows to be forever your wife.

I mean't these words from deep in my heart,
The good times, the bad times we shall never be apart.

With all that life has given us to share,
sometimes it seems so hard to bare,

One heavy burden, then another to follow,
they continue to come, into tomorrow.

I seem to lose courage, I say " This is wrong."
But you my darling continue to be strong.

You always say "Its another step in life,
Which I can take as long as your my wife."

You never falter under the strain,
No matter how much you suffer in pain.

I admire the courage that you show everyday,
With your illnesses you go on, come what may.

Even though these struggles can be distressing,
In a positive way, they are a blessing.

For they have brought two souls together to form one,
That can never be broken, torn, or undone.

One soul is yours, one soul is mine,
Together our soul can always shine.

For with you by my side forever more,
Our strength and our courage will always soar.

I look at you and my heart stops
Because I can not believe you are gone
You are a perfect angel, so
what went wrong
Missing you is a huge part
of my day

In Loving Memory...

The time has come to say good-bye
to a friend so near and dear.
To cherish all the good times had
which occurred throughout the year.

It was always such a pleasure
to see his smiling face.
This is now a treasure
that can never be replaced.

On the day God called him home
time had just stood still.
I still can't believe it,
I guess I never will.

May the Lord keep watch
over the loved ones left behind
to help them gain the strength they need
and give them piece of mind.

Dad....

No-one knows the heartache
a loss like this can bring.
I was shocked to hear you'd "gone away"
cause, to me, you were everything.

Every day without you
is more than I can bear
I wish I could turn around
and see you standing there.

I treasure all the simple things
that life has bought my way,
from when I was a child
up until today.

They say time heals all wounds.
How could they ever know?
They never knew you
or how much I loved you so.

Now that you have been
laid to rest,
I feel that by knowing you
I have been truly blessed.

A Poem for Your Birthday

Counting the candles
Like tarot cards;
Reading our past. Believing they’ll tell us
Where we’re going instead of
Where we’ve been. Looking back on days past
To determine the quality
Of our life. But days are not the
Measure of our years;
Scars are. The scars that show we
Have lived and bled and healed
To live and love and laugh
Another year.

Her hair was up in a ponytail
Her favourite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's Day at school,
And she couldn't wait to go.

But her mommy tried to tell her,
That she probably should stay home.
Why the kids might not understand,
If she went to school alone.

But she was not afraid;
She knew just what to say.
What to tell her classmates
Of why he wasn't there today.

But still her mother worried,
For her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again,
She tried to keep her daughter home.

But the little girl went to school,
Eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never see
A dad who never calls.

There were daddies along the wall in back,
For everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently,
Anxious in their seats.

One by one the teacher called,
A student from the class.
To introduce their daddy,
As seconds slowly passed.

At last the teacher called her name,
Every child turned to stare.
Each of them was searching,
For a man who wasn't there.

"Where's her daddy at?"
She heard a boy call out.
"She probably doesn't have one,"
Another student dared to shout.

And from somewhere near the back,
She heard a daddy say,
"Looks like another deadbeat dad,
Too busy to waste his day."

The words did not offend her,
As she smiled up at her Mom.
And looked back at her teacher,
Who told her to go on.

And with hands behind her back,
Slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child,
Came words incredibly unique.

"My Daddy couldn't be here,
Because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be,
Since this is such a special day.

And though you cannot meet him,
I wanted you to know.
All about my daddy,
And how much he loves me so.

He loved to tell me stories
He taught me to ride my bike.
He surprised me with pink roses,
And taught me to fly a kite.

We used to share fudge sundaes,
And ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him,
I'm not standing here alone.

"Cause my daddy's always with me,
Even though we are apart
I know because he told me,
He'll forever be in my heart"

With that, her little hand reached up,
And lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat,
Beneath her favourite dress.

And from somewhere in the crowd of dads,
Her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter,
Who was wise beyond her years.

For she stood up for the love
Of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her,
Doing what was right.

And when she dropped her hand back down,
Staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft,
But its message clear and loud.

"I love my daddy very much,
He's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here,
But heaven's just too far.

You see he was a fireman
And died just this past year
When airplanes hit the towers
And taught Americans to fear.

But sometimes when I close my eyes,
It's like he never went away."
And then she closed her eyes,
And saw him there that day.

And to her mother's amazement,
She witnessed with surprise.
A room full of daddies and children,
All starting to close their eyes.

Who knows what they saw before them,
Who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second,
They saw him at her side.

"I know you're with me Daddy,"
To the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers,
Of those once filled with doubt.

Not one in that room could explain it,
For each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside her,
Was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.


And a child was blessed, if only for a moment,
By the love of her shining bright star.
And given the gift of believing,
That heaven is never too far

Our Life...

Here we are a few years on
no poems have I written not even one
life has changed quite drastically
we now have a wonderful loving family.
Life's dealt it's ups and downs
lots of smiles, lots of frowns
all could have been simple and sweet
instead sent us tears of success and defeat.
Death came close and let itself be known
has kept it's distance 'tho' not forever gone
Life's light can fade in the blink of an eye
this sad but true thought has lead us to cry.
Life's so precious,unpredictable and free
as much as you and I will enable it to be
so the moral of our life...the philosophy?
"Live life to it's fullest and take each day by day"

Desiderata

 

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well
